The Fair Trade Commission (Chairman Han Ki-Jeong, hereafter 'KFTC') together with the Korean Society of Fair Trade (President Im Young-Jae) hosted a joint academic conference titled 'Desirable Directions of Online Platform Policy in Korea' today at 1:40 PM in the Conference Room on the 19th floor of the Korea Press Center in Seoul.

This academic conference was convened to bring together academics and stakeholders in discussions about the tasks and issues in promoting competition in the platform market, and to debate the optimal competition policy directions for the Korean online platform sector.

Secretary General Nam Dong-il stated, "The entrenchment of monopolies around major platform services and the diminishing dynamism of the market highlight the urgent global task of restoring competition in the platform market and protecting consumers." He expressed hope that "through today's academic conference, many constructive prescriptions will be discussed to ensure that Korea's online platform market continues to develop sustainably with a free, fair, and healthy ecosystem."

President Im Young-Jae of the Korean Society of Fair Trade emphasized, "The process and outcome of reaching consensus on the desirable framework and direction of online platform policy in Korean society is a crucial task for the future of the Korean economy." He hoped that this academic conference would "serve as an important cornerstone where experts and stakeholders come together to accumulate social discussions in this direction."

The conference was divided into two sessions. The first session featured presentations and designated discussions on policy tasks and issues to promote platform competition. The second session included a panel discussion on the desirable direction of online platform policy in Korea, with various stakeholders and experts participating.

The KFTC plans to continue communicating with experts and stakeholders to reference today's conference discussions in formulating competitive policies suitable for Korea's digital economy."
