Attending the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Competition Policy Headquarters

- Contributing to the advancement of competition laws and strengthening of enforcement capabilities in developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region -

Cho Hong-seon, vice chairman of the Korea Fair Trade Commission (hereinafter referred to as "Cho Hong-seon, vice chairman") attended the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Competition Policy Headquarters of the OECD Korea Policy Center at Botanic Park Hotel in Cottyard, Seoul, at 14:00 on May 28 (Tue).

About 80 domestic and foreign guests attended the event, including Vice Chairman Cho Hong-seon, OECD Deputy Secretary-General Takeuchi Yoshiki, OECD Competition Commission Chairman Frederic Jenni, Mongolia's Bilgun Bolavatar Fair Competition Consumer Protection Commissioner, George Washington University Professor William Kovasik (former chairman of the U.S. FTC), and high-ranking officials from competition authorities in the Asia-Pacific region.

The OECD Korea Center Competition Policy Headquarters was established in April 2004 under the MOU between the Korean government and the OECD to promote the exchange of experience and knowledge in the field of competition law and policy, focusing on the Asia-Pacific region, and to strengthen the competition law enforcement capabilities of these countries.

The Competition Policy Headquarters has held a total of 120 international competition workshops and seminars over the past 20 years and has contributed to the introduction and advancement of competition laws in sub-regional countries by educating and sharing model systems and law enforcement cases of OECD and member countries for about 4,000 officials from competition authorities and judges in charge of competition laws in 40 countries.

In this commemorative event, a roundtable was held between senior OECD and regional competition authorities under the theme of "The Role of Competition Policy for Effective Competition Advocacy*" while having time to look back on the achievements of the OECD Korea Center's Competition Policy Headquarters over the past 20 years.

* Various efforts and activities to ensure that the importance of competition can be understood and applied to the outside world, such as citizens other than competition policy experts

In his congratulatory speech, Vice Chairman Cho Hong-seon celebrated the 20th anniversary of the OECD Korea Center Competition Policy Headquarters, which has made a breakthrough contribution to the introduction and advancement of competition laws in regional countries through the sharing of exemplary systems and law enforcement cases in OECD member countries, and said he expects to continue active activities as a 架 bridge connecting the OECD and the Asia-Pacific region in the field of competition law.

In addition, he emphasized the need to expand international cooperation to solve or alleviate the rapidly growing cross-border competition law problem, and said that he would contribute to the development of the competition committee through active participation and cooperation as a member of the OECD Competition Committee.

The following roundtable featured a keynote speech by OECD Competition Committee Chairman Frederic Jenny on the theme of "Competition Advocacy", panel discussions by senior competition authorities*, and a theme speech by William Kovasik, a professor at George Washington University.

In the future, the Korea Fair Trade Commission and the OECD Korea Center Competition Policy Headquarters will continue to work closely to contribute to the advancement of competition laws and systems in the Asia-Pacific region and to strengthen Korea's status in the OECD.
